Do you score a series while you're still watching it, or only after?

So this just crossed my mind after looking at someone's list who had multiple series scored after only watching one or two episodes: frankly I just don't understand that. I've always had a strict "no score until I'm finished" policy, because the ending is just as crucial as the journey in my eyes. To be honest, I often spend time letting a series sink in for a day after finishing it, or even researching certain aspects of the show to get a firmer grasp of what I had just seen (mainly for anime with deeper meanings and symbolism) before coming to a solid conclusion.

I don't really care one way or the other- the each their own, but I'm curious to see how this poll turns out.

EDIT: Interesting results so far. I was expecting this to be closer to 50/50, but it's stayed at roughly 33/67 the entire time.

I'd never score after only a couple episodes unless I outright hated it and drop it, halfway through perhaps I'll give a preliminary one but will certainly change it depending on the conclusion. It can be so hard to stick the landing as Game of Thrones has shown us just recently...

I usually get a sense of what I'll rate something as within the first 3-4 episodes but I'll wait until completion to click on that dropdown menu.

No. I rate it after I'm done watching it. Whether it be good, bad or after dropping it. If I meet any of those 3 criteria that's MY green light to go rate what I thought of what I watched.

Some shows start off strong and end poorly ie. Game of Thrones.
IMO I think stuff like that is should be rated after the fact that it is finished.

It can give a clear indicator of what the general public thought of the whole thing. Beginning, end, and everything in between. Not only that but it can help people in their decision if the show is worth watching or not also beginning, middle and end.

If it's a long running show and I really want to rate it, then I'll do so, but I must be 100 episodes into the show. There have only been two shows in which I rated earlier before finishing and that's Gintama and Keroro Gunsou. The rest I only rate until after completion.

I used to after finishing half but I stopped some months ago because I realized it's dumb. I give a score only when I'm completely done no matter how sure I am while watching. Anything can change.

Normally I wait till after I've finished a series, with some exceptions. If the series is more than 2 cour I typically get impatient and give it a rating, though I don't always do so (I still haven't put my rating down for Jojo part 5), or if I'm watching a show at a slower pace and it's episodic.

I rate something as soon as I know my general enjoyment level and adjust it when necessary. My ratings are most useful to myself, anyway, so it's good to know at a glance which on-hold show I should get back to based on what I gave it last season when I paused it.

Also, if only the people who finish it score it, it will inflate the average, since mainly only those who like it will finish it. I think for that reason, it's important to rate your disliked/dropped shows, too.

I always had the unspoken/unwritten rule that I have to have seen a certain number of episodes before scoring a show, or with shorter ones that they have to be a certain lengths, which is why I barely score any OVA's/specials and the alike even if its like 20+ episodes if they're all only 3 minutes long there's most likely nothing to score in comparisant to the actual show. Not to mention that they normally do something entirely different with those. And since I'm normally marathoning shows I rate them when I'm done ^^

The only ones I rate before finishing are seasonals so far, but even those I only score if I'm at least a certain number of episodes/percentage into the show. And even then, the score is not final until I'm done with the show.

Depends.

If it's a short 12-24 episode series, i'll usually just wait 'till i finish before i rate.

If it's a long-running 100+ episode series, i'll probably give a temporary rating when i'm about 40-50 episodes in, give or take. By that point, i think i'll have a fairly clear grasp on my general thoughts and feelings towards the series.

I used to score some anime while I was watching them if they were particularly long. Currently I don't score any anime I haven't finished unless it's for a meme, like Pingu or Miru Tights.

I usually get a good idea as to what I'll be rating it somewhere in the late beginning or middle stages of a series, however I never rate until I've finished the series.

One potential exception could be longer series, but if I were to make that exception I would still reflect on the previous rating given once I had finished the series.

Only after, but I keep a note pad open in the corner of my other monitor to quickly jot my thoughts down in case something happens. And if I notice something either done really well or really poorly done I'll make note of it when it either breaks my immersion or seriously impresses me.

Honestly I have a general idea of what score I'm giving around half way through the show but I don't give it until the end because well, you never know what's going to happen and it could get better or worse.

first impression matters. I give everything a score from the start, which I modify as the show progresses. most of them don't change that much overall, it's unusual for an anime to go beyond it's basic concept of fail so hard.

I rate it as I watch it

If I watch 4 episodes of an anime, and I think that so far it's an 8, I give it an 8. But if the quality drops later, I'll lower the rating, and vice versa

I don't score anything that's not completed, unless I've dropped it and have enough of an opinion to give it a score based on that.

For dropped series, they get scored similarly to completed series. I do have a few dropped series that I've scored based on a very small number of episodes, and they are usually low scores, though in a few cases they are higher and basically act as reminders to myself that "this wasn't half bad, but I just wasn't interested in it", or "I used to watch this and really liked it" for a couple long runners.

Aside from that (and if any of those shows I end up restart watching, which hasn't happened yet), I don't score things that I'm still watching or have on-hold.

That's because, while like @nyugvo6 said "first impression matters" (which can often lead me to drop series with premises that annoy me), the execution matters more when it comes to shows I'm actually willing to watch. Maybe I'm just more patient, but I've found that some stories that take a long time to "spin up" have quite spectacular "payouts" at the end that make it worth it, so something that might seem boring early on to some viewers is often just fine for me as long as I'm reasonably interested in the setting and characters.

Like @Reina_Orikasa I sometimes find myself coming up with an opinion in mid-show, but I try to remind myself to keep an open mind that the ending could make it turn out other ways, and I don't rate until after I'm done watching all of it.

That said, most of what I watch is one or two cours long, not long-runners where it might make sense to rate after watching a substantial but incomplete amount of the show.

a seasoned watcher can judge the general quality of a show within the first few episodes, possibly even within the first episode, fairly easily. Usually the show doesn't really change in quality that much from your first impression, only by around plus/minus 2 points from your original score.

I really don't have rules regarding this, sometimes I rate early, other times only after finishing, though if I'm going to drop something that's still gonna be rated no matter what, to reflect that said something didn't work me and/or I have no interest in finishing it.

I often rate a series after a couple of episodes only to give friends who are watching my profile an idea of how I like it, though in most cases it changes while I'm watching it, right after finishing it, or a couple weeks / months in some cases after to make it more coherent with the rest of my list ( I try not to do that anymore, it happened mosly when I didn't have a solid grasp of what I liked ). In the end it doesn't really change anything except maybe to get a progressive idea of your mindset.

If it's a longer ongoing series like one piece, yes. Usually don't rate shorter anime until I finish it but I will rate shows whenever I want to, so it doesn't matter. Also I don't see the need to rate shows when you've only seen the first few episodes.

While watching, because, why not? It's not that I wouldn't be able to change the score whenever I want, right? The way some people are saying, it feels like they can't change the score whatsoever after they'd chosen it, so they'd need to wait until the very end to hit the button. It's funny.

I generally only rate things after I completed them, because the quality of it may vary a lot between it's run.
I remember I rated Nisekoi as it came out and I kept shifting it's score from 9 to 6 to 7 to 9 again, to 8... It's better to just rate it when it's over.
Now for things that I'm following for a long time like One Piece or Berserk, I don't mind giving it a "place holder" rating, but that doesn't mean it'll change. I did change my scores of Bleach and Naruto upon completing them.

I only rate things after I finish them. Exceptions are only when anime are airing since they have a limited amount per week. Most of the ratings change from week 1 to week 12 while airing so its kind of a bad habit.

I rate an anime by its plot. Like, if the anime's entertaining, exciting, or boring. It depends on myself if I get that feeling. Like, "ahhhh, I rate this anime 8 because the ending is a cliffhanger or something and its plot is kind."

Many episodes have insane payoff that can be hard to gauge without the whole picture.
So it makes sense to score them after the end, except if :
- the show is seasonal (meaning nobody is rating it through the "big picture" lens)
- it's 40+ episodes long (depending on personal tolerance)
- way too many things seem unredeemable, like absolutely revolting art or stuff like that (again, depending on personal tolerance)
In the end though, there is no "right" way to do it. Reading everyone's opinion is quite interesting!

It depends on the anime. If it's finished, I will rate it when I already watch the whole series. If it's still ongoing, maybe I will rate it 4-5 episodes if the anime is only 12 episode, or even I just rate it at the first episode if the anime is so bad and doesn't have any potential (Harem bullsh*t anime, brosis love, etc). But sometimes I change the score for ongoing anime, depends on will that anime go uphill or downhill.

i wonder if they would change the score when they reach the ending if their feelings changes?

I sometimes rate shows while I'm watching when I have a solid understanding of how much I'm enjoying it, it is uncommon for me to change that while I'm watching it or reading something. As some here already said it is mostly for my own sake that I do this. I can see how my enjoyment of it changed over the course of my watching.
