Polonaise is danced sometimes during weddings, New Year's Eve parties, outside during historical events, and if it is danced , it is ALWAYS the first dance.
Polonaise is a ceremonial dance opening important events or occasions. The polonaise comes from court customs where it was danced in Polish magnate palaces. Nowadays, many other countries have adopted this dance as the opening dance to official balls.
The best part is that once you learn it, you remember it for the rest of your life. Sometimes at various events, complete strangers can dance it with each other, without practicing. I myself have taken part in something like this a few times, although the choreography is always a little different, knowing the basics it is possible to dance it without preparation. 😊
Thanks a lot for the reaction 😍 This is a video of one of numerous balls that take place a hundred days before the maturity exams. I suggested a video from Vilnus , where it was performed in national costumes, with a more complicated choreography and more professionally, but this one is like most of the school performances. And yes, it's also danced at weddings and historical events. I danced it last year , almost 40 years following my maturity exams , at at my school 100th anniversary and this was a very moving moment, over 500 graduates of all ages danced it together ....
This dance has a long history, starting in the 17th century. At the courts of Polish kings, the polonaise was an element of court ceremonial, serving as a parade of the nobility in front of the monarch. It was danced at the beginning of balls, and now it inaugurates some events to emphasize their solemn character. "Studniówka" - a ball organized at the end of high school, 100 days before the final exams. This ceremonial dance begins the event, with the school principal traditionally performing in the first pair. Then the school principal "disappears" and there is time for more modern dances 😉 82
In our family we always dance polonez during weddings. It is great, because everyone can dance it, from little kids to elderly folks. Even me (I'm terrible at dancing in general).
It is essentially a prom. Stódniówka means 100 days before Matura, which is the exam at the end of high school. We learn it for months sometimes instead of PE classes and usually we never do it again, unless at some weddings.
'Studniówka' in English means prom, i.e. 100 days until the high school leaving exam(matura). There is a different education system in Poland. You take the Matura exam at the age of 18-19. Traditionally, this ball begins with the national court dance Polonaise. The polonaise is also called the walked dance(chodzony). The school principal is in the first pair at the beginning of the dance. Here they dance to the music from the film 'Pan Tadeusz'. The music was composed by Wojciech Kilar. Known, among others, for the music to the film Dracula by Francis Ford Coppola.
I will never forget Polonaise of people my year, when we had our own prom - they made it once at 19:00, then they had to do it again at 23:00 while most of us were drunk, so first time it was best take they ever had (including exercises in count) and during second one everyone was dancing while laughing at each others' mistakes
"Studniówka" means literally "100 days prior" so it is the prom that is happening around 100 days before high school final exams (matura exams) that will affect your chance on getting to university you wanted. This particular dance is tradition of Poland that originated from noble class and it's supposed to be a way of saying: "you are now an adult and educated man/woman".
This dance is like a presentation (of the most important people) to the audience. I love it actually :) And although it seems easy it's needed weeks of preparation and practice to coordinate this presentation in the best way! :) And here on the prom - the most important people are the students (sometimes principal of the school and teachers) - they have probably practiced it for so long ... I know it looks just innocent 😜 IT IS NOT - it's really important and shows the maturity.
Polonaise, Kujawiak, Oberek, Mazur, Krzesany, Polka Mazurka, Szot, Polka Kucana, Fafur, Wiwat. ruclips.net/video/BwOe9UzxDu0/видео.html ruclips.net/video/dz8QBOfnxc0/видео.html Ecco come ci divertiamo ai matrimoni... ruclips.net/video/DYaD1iLHgnI/видео.html
I have a question though- why have you picked just ths video? it seems to me that all You Tube reactions to poloneses are based on this particular film. "Studniówka 2022 POLONEZ II Liceum " which is nice , but just one of hundreds. The performances in Vilnius i suggested ,however are beautiful, stunning, much, much better and worthy of reaction. Is there some issue with the copywriters or so?
This version of the music comes from a movie. But Polonaise as music goes back centuries with versions by Chopin and Tchaikovsky. There are dozens of videos on line with different choreography from schools, civic events, etc. The steps are basic, but can be arranged in many different ways. Check them out. Here's a more recent one: ruclips.net/video/WCW3zmtqlfE/видео.html Or several: ruclips.net/video/1SixzpoLk7M/видео.html
Not everybody, just as this guy admited, has talent for dancing. One wouldn't leave out someone to feel bad because person can't dance. This way, not to mention that polonaise is an old traditional polish dance, the ceremony is inclusive for everyone. Yes it is not as exciting as another traditional polish dance called Mazur, but the same can be said about Minuet.
It's not meant to be amusing, this is just to start the ball, to feel the connection with past generations , with culture, oh my gosh, with all those deep feelings that will stay inside for the rest of your life....with the memories or youth... there will be hundreds of normal parties in your life, but the ones that start with polonez are special.
