Would you watch your favorite animator's/director's/scriptwriter's/composer's etc older works, even if they date back decades ago?

Many notable active animation producers in today's anime started their career in the 80s and 90s,some even in the 70s.

Would your interest in them make you watch an older series?

Eg with Miyazaki's new movie, would you go as back to watch his late 60s-70s work?
Or with the new Evangelion movie close, would you watch the director's older series like Nadia, Evangelion, Kare Kano etc
Or with Gundam, would you watch the older ones by Tomino or other Mecha and non-Mecha anime he was involved with?

I was pleasantly surprised when all the things I liked in series by Junichi Sato, starting with Kaleido Star 15 years ago, followed later by Aria and one year ago with Doremi, are also present in Maple Town and Palm Town. I wanted to watch it in Japanese for better voice actor consistency and episode availability compared to the dubs, but back then it was harder to find the series complete. In fact I noticed the settings of Palm Town and Kaleido Star are very similar, including the roller skate sequence in the op and ed respectively.

Yeah. I've already checked out Anno's and Oshii's older stuff and I'm planning to watch Tomino's shows soon.
edit: there's a thread about tomino's non gundam stuff on /m/ right now. I guess I'm lucky.

No because of my dedication to complete the franchise. I ain't opening a can of worms just so I can complete (or most likely never be able to complete if obscure) something they were involved in that is long, tedious, and/or expand to multiples of entries just so I can say I watched everything I did from them.

i.e. Yuasa with Crayon Shin-chan

Yeah, definitely. For me, older anime is more of a selling point rather than a drawback mainly because I personally have a slight preference for cel animation.

No, as I try to be careful with what I choose to watch. Although there are many in the industry I respect and praise for their works, I recognize that not everything they’ve made will probably be to my liking.

Well, I watched most of Shinichiro Watanabe's works(everything except Carol and Tuesday, I just didn't like the theme of that one) because I really liked Samurai Champloo. But I never did something similar with any other director/producer/scriptwriter/composer.

It's something I usually do with manga - if I really like one manga from a particular mangaka, I'll probably read his other works no matter how old they are (the fact that anime/manga is older was never a problem for me).

I don't have any favorite people in those categories.

I tried that. I didn't like them.

I don't think anyone who hasn't seen the old Evangelion will be watching the new one.

Yes, definitely. In fact, I already have to some extent, as Shirow's works are thankfully easy to watch online (Ghost in the Shell, Dominion, etc.)

For music, also yes. I frequently listen to Roki Vulović, a Yugoslav musician who made (and still makes) music. Many of his songs that I listen to were made during the Yugoslav Wars

Here's one called Spavajte mirno. It's a sad song about soldiers who have fallen in battle. My favorite part is the 3rd verse

3rd verse lyrics in English (I removed one repetition of of a few lines to shorten the length of my reply): "Sleep peacefully, our knights. After the storm, the rainbow will be seen. Brave and beautiful, godlike, you are our everlasting pride, our everlasting sorrow. Our everlasting sorrow."

3rd verse lyrics in Serbo-Croatian (I removed one repetition of of a few lines to shorten the length of my reply): "Spavajte Mirno, Vitezovi Dični. Nakon Oluje Javiće Se Duga. Hrabri I Lijepi, Bogovima Slični. Naš Ste Ponos Viječni, Naša Vječna Tuga. Naša Vječna Tuga."

Yes, of course. I'm actually watching Alps no Shoujo Heidi right now as I type this. It's easily the best looking show I've seen from the entire decade so far.
I don't really have an aversion to watching older stuff any ways tho so it doesn't necessarily have to have someone I like involved at all to be of interest to me.

I have same idea to make a trheads like this. Unfortunately. I'm too busy(lazy?) and never do it. Thanks for this.

I will go to watch it. Why? Because i want to more appreciate them. Sometimes we can see they grow as creators from time to time trhough their work. My favourites example of this is Naoko Yamada.

Yes I generally enjoy older anime just as much as newer ones and indeed the main reason I watched gunbuster and plan on watching karekano is because I knew anno directed them. İ also do the same for yamada as well but since she started in the 2000s there is no oldies in her catalog.

If a series has a group of creatives on it that I like based on their works I've seen prior then yes. I'll get to it at some point

Funny that you mention Junichi Sato because I've been watching a lot of his work lately. I had watched the entirety of Princess Tutu last year, saw the first eps of Kaleido Star and Crayon Kingdom of Dreams sometime ago, watched A Whisker Away almost as soon as it came out on Netflix, and I'm currently watching Umi Monogatari. He's even storyboarded one of the more memorable episodes of Uta∽Kata lol
But yeah I definitely would like to check out his older work. Same with several of my profile's other favorite people and Hayao Miyazaki, maybe I'll check out Future Boy Conan someday.

I would definitely watch the older works of someone. I would be curious to see what their earlier work was like, and how much it progressed or changed over the years. Leiji Matsumoto is a good example, his work has spanned decades.

Why are you kids so afraid of anything that happened pre-2000?

One reason I did not mention voice actors, as there are many 50+ year olds and some are nearing their 80s too!

@Fario-P

Waiting for the Doremi movie too. Future Boy Conan has everything he would use in later Ghibili features like Castle in the Sky and the airplane models were also used in Nausicaa manga.

@Damnits

Yes, song is very sad even without knowing language. It has Greek lyrics too, fortunately authentic and not machine translated.
